Umit Bayulken Obituary (1949 - 2025)

How do I explain the life of the human being that represented so much simplicity and complexity. My husband, Umit Bayulken was born on May 10, 1949. He passed away on January 06, 2025. Wherever he lived, wherever he worked, he touched people in the most profound, memorable way. As a child, he loved arts. Created 2 popular radio programs for children and sung in the opera house. Later on in life, he worked for Boeing, Pan American World Airways, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines before moving on to a more complex business environment in Publication and Logistics. While he did not enjoy flying, he loved the airline world. Most of all he loved reaching foreign destinations. Those who knew him well understood that Umit didn’t just describe the country he visited or went to for business. He could explain the world and each country through in depth understanding of its history, culture, politics and ethnicity. His inquisitive, brilliant mind allowed him to retain the information very few are able to retain or comprehend. Umit could name every star above us, every instrument ever played in the ancient or present time, every historical fact ever recorded. He had great grasp of science, like a sponge he was able to absorb and retain vast knowledge of most things and he loved to share this knowledge with those that wanted to learn and yes, there were times when we fell asleep during his very long, detailed lessons. A well-rounded person, he loved to read, fish and most of all he loved to EAT. Legendary around the world, he taught famous chefs how to make his special dishes. It was almost comical to watch a famous hotel’s chefs prepare their special meals for him and wait for his approval. He wasn’t trying to prove any points. This was just one of his ways to reach out, to establish connection with people. Although he was highly accomplished and decorated professional, it is his love for people and children in particular that made him so special. After uniting Sister Cities of Houston, another bridge to the world, he worked with city administration and the individual school districts to initiate annual Children's Day in Houston. Partner in Education, he loved speaking to children in their class environment. They responded to him in a very loving, trusting way because in many ways his heart was just always like that of a child, filled with love and innocence. He was a generous contributor to Shriners Children's and the St. Jude Children's Research Foundation. For his commitment to children, for his compassion and generosity, he was recognized by both. He was both proud and appreciative of the many prestigious, professional awards that he received throughout his life time. He was equally proud of the recognition bestowed on him for his civic work. On August 19th, 1993, he was recognized by the City of Houston for Meritorious service to the community. When his work took him to Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, his success in business resulted from the love he had for the region and its people, as well as his understanding of the cultures and customs. It was during those years that Umit forged lifetime relationships close to his heart. Umit was a man of character. Integrity was always at the front of the actions he took for work and life in general. He was a loving husband, loyal friend, devoted Umit Baba to Umid, Emin, Lara, Atlas, Rose, Alex and Adam, a willing mentor and a traditional man that believed in family values. He was loved by those that knew him and his absence will have a profound impact on many lives in many corners of the world.
