Thomas Riser

Newberry, South Carolina

Thomas Pope Riser, 92, of Kinards, died September 15, 2026 at Newberry Health.  Born on April 26, 1934, Tom was the son of the late Ola Mae Reighley and William Wallace Riser.
He attended Bush River School and was a graduate of Newberry College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

Tom first worked in dairy farming and then in industrial management for Monsanto in Greenwood, retiring after 23 years in 1985. After his retirement, he started up a turkey farm which he managed for years at his residence. Having earned many awards for poultry production, he also enjoyed raising beef cattle over the years.

He was an active and dedicated member of Bush River Baptist Church for many years, serving in various roles such as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and chairman of the Board of Deacons.

No matter his life roles, Tom was hardworking, humble and mild-mannered -- the epitome of a great man.

He was predeceased by brothers Harold Riser, David Riser, and Wallace Riser; and by sisters Lofton Riser and Elizabeth Sheriff.

Tom is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Barbara, with whom he was married for nearly 70 years.

He is also survived by his children Ken Riser and his wife Cindy of Clinton; Lisa Sutker and her husband Neal of Hendersonville, NC; and Carole Murray and her husband Glenn of Little Mountain.

His loving grandchildren include Amanda Habib (Kareem) of Maryland; Evan Sutker (Palak) of Charlotte; Noah Riser of Clinton; and Chase Murray and Will Murray, both of Greenville.  Great-grandchildren include Dolly, Mouny and Gabe Habib; and Leyah Sutker.

Tom is also survived by a dear sister Margaret Lancaster of Mount Pleasant.

Services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 19, 2026, by Rev. Jeff Payne at Bush River Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church after the graveside service.

Pallbearers are George Counts, Mike Riddle, Evan Sutker, Noah Riser, Chase Murray and Will Murray.

Honorary pallbearers are active and inactive deacons of Bush River Baptist Church.

Very special thanks to the staff of Newberry Health, especially to the nurses on the third floor for their constant care and concern.

The family suggests memorials be made to Bush River Baptist Church, 8936 Bush River Road, Newberry, or to the charity of one's choice.
