Myrtle &8220Myrt&8221 Ruth Zimmer Obituary (1931

Myrtle "Myrt" Ruth Zimmer, age 90, of Elgin, passed away peacefully in her home on March 31, 2021. She was born March 14, 1931 in Cincinnati, OH to her loving parents, Charles and Hilda Lindeman (nee Greenfield). Myrt grew up in Cincinnati. As a child, she always wanted to have some kind of ball in her hands. Her mother couldn't understand this, and wondered why Myrt didn't want to play with dolls and such like the other girls. Instead, Myrt played baseball, and was often picked first to play on a team with the boys. Her older brother wasn't very happy when she was picked first, but after awhile he got used to it! She could really run and throw and hit! Myrt graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education, and taught P.E. for 20 years. Myrt met her husband, Richard, when she was cheerleading during a basketball game. They were married for 43 years, and she was a wonderful homemaker and mother to their three children. Myrt stayed active, playing women's softball in Elgin for many years until she decided to quit after breaking her wrist sliding into home plate at the age of 65. She also took up golf at age 34, joining a women's league at Bonnie Dundee where she has played ever since. Oftentimes at a golf outing, she would come home with a long drive trophy. Myrt loved being outdoors, whether it was playing sports, boating, or working in her garden. She also enjoyed quilting with her friends at First United Methodist Church of Elgin. She especially loved spending time with her family and being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Myrt was preceded in death by her parents, Charles G. Lindeman and Hanna Hilda Lindeman; husband, Richard A. Zimmer; and brothers, Charlie and Louie Lindeman. She is survived by her children, Tony (Barb) Zimmer, John (Sonja) Zimmer, and Jan (Dwayne) Sedig; grandchildren, Jane (Matt) Templeton, Sam (Tai) Zimmer, Luke Zimmer, Nathan Zimmer, Seth Zimmer, Rebecca (Dustin) Messenger, Valerie (Ryan) Mackintosh, Amy Sedig, and Michael Sedig; and great grandchildren, Leo Templeton, Regen Messenger, and Everlynn Messenger. Visitation will be 5:00pm to 9:00pm, with funeral service at 7:00pm, Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Mourners are encouraged to review the funeral home COVID-19 public health policies ahead of time. Face masks are required to enter the facility.
