Mitchell Flynn Dunlap Obituary (1953

Mitchell Flynn Dunlap departed this life on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis; IN. Services will take place on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 11:00am at First Baptist Church of Kingsford Heights, visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of service. Burial will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery. Pastor Kevin D. Long will officiate. Mitchell Flynn Dunlap was born on August 31, 1953 to Ethel Lee Ballard-Dunlap and the late Shed Hill Dunlap, Sr. Mitchell accepted Christ and was baptized by the late Rev. Robert Redding Sr. at First Baptist Church in Kingsford Heights, IN where he became a member and served on the usher board. Mitchell attended Kingsford Heights Elementary School and graduated from LaPorte High School. Mitchell showed a love of sports from the time he could walk and excelled in them throughout his school years. He was one of the first African Americans to play three sports and letter in all of them for three consecutive years. Mitchell won numerous awards and broke many records in LaPorte County, IN for his outstanding athletic ability. Mitchell continued his love of sports and attended Davenport Jr. College in Grand Rapids, MI on a basketball scholarship for two year. He then transferred to Alcorn State University in Lorman, MS where he received his bachelor's degree in Education. Years later, he was inducted into the LaPorte High School Hall of Fame for baseball. Mitchell eagerly shared his love of sports and worked for several years as a health and physical education teacher in Chicago where he coached the basketball and baseball team. While in college, Mitchell met Audrey Jones and out of their young love, a beautiful daughter, Hadiya Karayan was born. Mitchell loved his daughter with all of his heart. Then came his grandson Amir Zende who follows in his granddads footsteps with his love of sports. Mitchell was extremely proud of the athlete Amir has become. Hadiya and Amir reside in Atlanta, GA. Mitchell leaves behind his loving Mother, Ethel L. Dunlap of Kingsford Heights, IN. Three brothers; Roger (Sharon) Dunlap of Savoy, IL, Larry (Jenice) Dunlap of Indianapolis, IN and Lamar (Paula) Dunlap of Kingsford Heights, IN. Three sisters; Ray (Lester) Bynum of Hurst, TX, Frances (Calvin) Evans of Michigan City, IN and Cheryl Boiser of Houston, TX; His loving daughter, Hadiya Reynolds and grandson Amir Reynolds of Atlanta, GA; Two loving aunts; Mattie Dunlap of Michigan City, IN and Mary Williams of Jackson, MS; One Uncle; George (Barbara) Ballard of Queens, NY. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceding him in death; his father, Shed Hill Dunlap Sr. Five brothers; John Nicholas, William Garrett, Shed Hill Dunlap Jr., Herman Earl Dunlap and Eric Scott Dunlap. One sister; Alice Alfredia Dunlap-Dabney. He will be greatly missed by all!
