Mathew L. Gatlin Obituary (1938 - 2025) - Winslow Township, New Jersey

On Friday, March 11, 1938 in Bayboro, NC., Mathew Leon Gatlin was born to Mathew S. and Marion C. Gatlin. After 86 years on this earth, Mathew peacefully departed and went home to be with The Father on Thursday, February 27, 2025. Matt grew up in rural Creswell, NC. He was the oldest son. He was baptized at an early age. Matt was a member of St. John Missionary Church and sang in the male Chorus. Matt excelled in his studies at Creswell School where his academic abilities allowed him to skip a grade. Due to responsibilities at home, he had to work and help support the family. Matt was a social charmer and had an infectious smile. His hobbies included traveling, driving, fishing, hunting, working on cars, storytelling and devouring books. He read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation more than once. Matt essentially joined the Army for better opportunities. He served two terms and was honorably discharged Matt moved to Poughkeepsie, NY and worked at Vassar Brothers Hospital where he met and married JeanAnn Warner. They had 5 children together. In his latter years, Matt loved family gatherings and spending precious time with his children and grandchildren. He was lovingly referred to as “Pop-Pop” Matt, predeceased by his parents, stepfather, sisters Kathleen Pittman, Cora Myers, and brother William Gatlin. He leaves to cherish his memory: daughter Carlisa Gatlin-Brown (husband Jerry) Sicklerville, NJ; daughter Lavette Gatlin, and son Mathew L. Gatlin, Jr., Poughkeepsie, NY; daughter Colette Gatlin-Irving, Sicklerville, NJ and son Michael S. Gatlin (wife Josie), Philadelphia, PA. Grandchildren: Bria and Austin Brown, Tashaun Petteway, Jerell and Jayden Gatlin, Tamell and Taryn Irving, Franklin, Phoenix and Wilson Gatlin. Brother John H. Gatlin, Salisbury, MD and sister AnLaVonne Gatlin-Respass of Astoria, NY. Former wife, Jean Ann Warner-Lyons, former son-in-law Josh Irving and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, special friends Elton and Cynthia Jackson and Barry Thomas of Brooklyn, NY.
