Fitzroy Douglas Obituary (1948 - 2024)

Fitzroy E Douglas, (76), of Denver, Colorado, passed away on August 26, 2024, surrounded by his family. Fitzroy, fondly known as Roy, was born to Mavis Chaplain and the Reverend Dr. Nehemiah Douglas, Sr., in Annotto Bay, St. Mary’s parish, Jamaica, on May 21, 1948, He was an intelligent, humorous, and loving man, who graduated from Dinthill Technical High School before immigrating to the United States in 1966. Having never seen snow in his life, Roy was surprised by his first snowfall in Nashville, TN, on November 2 of that year. After studying political science at Tennessee State University, Roy moved his family to Michigan, where he was one of the first Black firefighters in the city of Jackson. It is here where he honed his culinary skills which he freely shared with his children and grandchildren. Following helping to integrate the fire department, Roy joined the City of Jackson police department, where he retired as a sergeant. Being required to carry a firearm prompted Roy to become a naturalized citizen in 1973. Upon retirement, Roy and a few of his former colleagues from the police department opened their own investigation business called Diversified Investigative and Consulting Services (DICS), Inc. - a testament to his humorous nature. Roy’s determined and witty spirit is carried on by his 5 children: Marcy Coker, Victor Douglas, Sr., Christina Douglas, Syeita Douglas, and Roynetta Douglas; his 19 grandchildren: Krislyn Maddox, Bryana Frazier, Myla (Donald) Sinette, Rhaylinn (Eric Jr.) Chappell, Marcus (Kim) Douglas, Kristopher Douglas, Victor Douglas II, Taylor (Nicole) Rodgers, Brianna Miller, Jacob Garrett, Delorian C. Douglas, Jamarius Smith-Douglas, Jamara Smith-Douglas, Jamiah Smith-Douglas, Mercedes Gerry, Myhles Gerry, Christopher Jaice Corley, M’Sapa “Junie” Corley, Jr., DeeKendré-Mykel Douglas; his 9 great-grandchildren: Chance, Amira, Eric III, Talya Grace, Aurora, Wyatt, Emery, Sidney Jr., Semaj; his siblings: Herman S. Douglas, Nehemiah Douglas, Jr., and Robbie (Lee) Woodard; and his two nephews: Cory and Nehemiah III (Kerone). Preceding him in death were his parents Mavis and Nehemiah (Glenda). Beyond being a dedicated civil servant, Roy was a compassionate, dependable, and generous father and grandfather. He always made time for those he loved. Roy was a principled man who lived according to his strong constitution until the very end. He will be greatly missed. Service complete! His signature in his email encompasses his perspective on life - To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world. There is no revenge so complete (sweet) as forgiveness.
