Carrollton, Georgia
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bernice S. Nichols, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who entered eternal rest on January 10, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on March 21, 1927, in Russell Springs, Kentucky, Bernice was the eldest daughter of fourteen children and learned early the values of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance while helping her family work the tobacco fields. Those early lessons shaped the strong, capable woman she would remain throughout her life.
Bernice spent many years working in the food service industry, most notably at Reid’s Restaurant and the Polar Cub, where she became known not only for her cooking but also for the care, she showed to everyone who came through the door. Making sure people were fed and felt welcome came naturally to her. At home, that same dedication continued. While her husband, Elton, worked as a truck driver, Bernice faithfully managed their cattle farm and household, balancing family life and farm responsibilities with quiet strength and grace.
Family was at the heart of everything Bernice did. She treasured time spent with her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and David Causey; her grandchildren, Mark Causey and Michelle Arrington; her great-grandchildren, Cody Causey, Kaela Causey, Reese Arrington, and Asher Arrington; her sister, Virginia Patterson; her brothers, Kermit Sullivan, Jerry Sullivan, and Larry Sullivan; and her many nieces and nephews. Her home was a place of comfort, filled with laughter, conversation, and the familiar scent of home-cooked meals. Caring for others was never a chore for Bernice; it was her calling.
In her later years, Bernice found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She could often be found sitting on her front porch, enjoying the sunshine and visiting with neighbors. She loved staying connected, always keeping her phone close to catch up with family and friends. Shopping trips, attending services at Ephesus Church of Christ, and participating in church revivals and singings were among her favorite activities. Her faith and her church family were a steady and meaningful part of her life.
Bernice was preceded in death by her father, Lilburn Sullivan; her mother, Jewell Harvey Sullivan; her loving husband, Elton V. Nichols; and her son, Danny Nichols, whom she missed dearly.
A funeral service honoring Bernice’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Martin & Hightower Funeral Home, with Bro. Allan Daniel officiating and Bro. Mark Carpenter delivering the eulogy. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at East Napoleon Church of Christ Cemetery, 2013 CR-621, Woodland, Alabama, at 1:00 p.m. EST. Pallbearers will be Mark Causey, Cody Causey, Kaela Causey, Dave Eady, Mike Kirby, and Jack McClendon. Honorary pallbearers will be her very special friend, Edward Herren, and Jimmy Pollard.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bernice’s life was one of service, love, and steady faith. She will be remembered for her warmth, her devotion to family, and the many lives she touched along the way. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
